The Foundation for Local News is raising funds to launch a dedicated Statehouse News Bureau — a team of journalists focused on explaining how decisions in Trenton affect residents and communities across New Jersey.

This reporting will be made freely available to all media outlets in the state, ensuring every community — no matter its size or resources — has access to credible, relevant coverage.

While state politics receive plenty of headlines, there’s often a disconnect between policy decisions and their local impact. This gap fuels voter apathy and weakens trust in government.

Our Statehouse Bureau will:

• Deliver clear, accessible reporting on how laws and policies affect families, schools, and businesses in every community
• Provide smaller outlets with high-quality, ready-to-publish content
• Strengthen civic engagement by reconnecting residents to the decisions that shape their lives
• Ensure underserved towns and news deserts don’t get left behind

Funding this initiative will allow us to:

• Hire and train journalists with deep policy knowledge and a commitment to local impact
• Provide free distribution of stories to news outlets statewide
• Build an open-source archive of reporting for schools, libraries, and community groups
• Sustain a newsroom model that is nonprofit, transparent, and mission-driven
