Grants restricted to nonprofits become available to you. Your structure doesn't change and you keep running your newsroom.
Most philanthropic funding is only available to nonprofits. That rules out a lot of the newsrooms doing the work — startups, independent publishers, for-profit community outlets, anyone who never set up a 501(c)(3).
We're the nonprofit on the application. You do the reporting.

Compliance, financial reporting and fund distribution are handled on our side. That's usually the part that disqualifies small outlets, and it's the part we take on.
Grant money is processed and sent out quickly, with the grant number on every check, so you can reconcile without calling us.
We can advise on aligning a proposal with what journalism and civic-engagement funders are actually looking for.
If you're reporting on a New Jersey community and you need a 501(c)(3) to receive a grant, ask us.
The fees
Fiscal sponsors typically charge between five and ten percent of a grant, with no ceiling. We charge a flat fee by grant size, so the larger the grant, the smaller the share that leaves your newsroom.
| Grant amount | Fee |
|---|---|
| Up to $25,000 | $250 |
| $25,001 – $50,000 | $1,000 |
| $50,001 – $100,000 | $2,000 |
| $100,001 – $250,000 | $3,500 |
| $250,001 – $500,000 | $7,000 |
| $500,001 – $1,000,000 | $15,000 |
| Over $1,000,000 | $25,000 |
Tell us about the grant you're going after. We'll come back to you before your deadline, and we'll say so quickly if we're not the right fit.
